Olive Oil Beauty Treatments: Ideas to Try at Home
Olive oil beauty benefits may be something new to some people. While olive oil is commonly found in kitchens and restaurants around the world, would you expect to find olive oil in the bathroom? Grab your bottle of olive oil and learn how to create remedies for common conditions, such as dry skin, cracked lips, damaged hair, dry cuticles and more!
Dry Skin
A large percentage of the population experiences dry skin, especially common during the winter months of the year. Begin by soaking your entire body in an olive oil infused bath. Fill the bathtub approximately 3/4 full of water with 1/2 cup olive oil. Soak in the water, allowing the olive oil to moisturize dry skin. When getting out of the bathtub, use caution, as the tub will be very slippery. Once thoroughly dry, apply olive oil to stubbornly dry areas, such as the elbows and heals.
Dry or Rough Hands
Because your hands are involved in the majority of what you do in a single day, it is not uncommon for them to become dry and/or rough. People with physically demanding jobs and those that utilize their hands frequently throughout the day may notice calluses developing on the palms. In a small mixing bowl, mix equal parts of sugar with equal parts of olive oil. Massage hands together, allowing the sugar to dissolve. Rinse hands with warm water and note how much smoother your hands feel after the treatment.
Dry Feet
The same mixture that was used on the hands can be applied directly to the feet. For cracked feet or severely dry skin, a night time treatment may work best. Generously apply extra virgin olive oil to the feet, rubbing into all crevices and coating the heels. To hold the moisture in, place a sheet of plastic wrap over the feet, allowing the wrap to cling to the oil. Cover feet and plastic wrap with socks and remove in the morning.
Dry Hair
Dry, damaged hair can cause even the most patient of people to have bad mornings. In a microwave-safe bowl, warm 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Shorter hair will not require as much olive oil and longer hair will require more. To prevent scalding of the scalp, be careful that the olive oil does not become too hot. After the olive oil is warm, apply generously to all parts of the hair, including the scalp. Pay close attention to split ends, massaging well. Cover the hair with a shower cap and allow the treatment to sit for 30 minutes. Once time has elapsed, shampoo the hair to remove excess oils.
Dry or Cracked Lips
From sunburn to cold, dry months of the year, sensitive lips can become chapped or worse, cracked. At bedtime, apply a small amount of olive oil to a cotton swab or clean finger. Dab onto the lips, and you will automatically notice how moisturized they are. Do this daily for best results.
Nails
In addition to dry hands, the cuticles of the fingernail can become dry. In a microwave-safe dish, combine 1/2 cup olive oil with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Place hands into the mixture using the fingers to massage olive oil onto the cuticle. Continue soaking the nails for 10 minutes.
