Some people are born with natural talents. Others work their entire life to become whatever it is that they want to become…
Some have inspirations, some have goals and others like Michelle, are born with talent.
Michelle Govender was born and lives in a town called Amanzimtoti for most of her life until recently moving away after high school. This 17 year old enjoys her life of writing and graphic design right by the beach and what she calls the Miami of South Africa.
After hearing this, I knew I wanted to know more about this young artist and get to know the real Michelle, the girl behind the artist’s brush…
Queen Buzz: What did you always want to be in life?
Michelle: When I was younger I had always wanted to be a vet! Then, I became interested in drawing and wanted to become a graphics designer. Through all those phases, I’ve still always wanted to be a writer – I used to create my own comics at the age of about eight! I was OBSESSED with the “Archie and Friends” comic series. Writing and drawing combined, what a dream job!
QB: I have always wanted to ask an artist this question…So here it goes. What is your favorite color? Do you find yourself working with this color more so?
MG: Oooh, tough one! I love the color purple and orange! I work more with a similar pattern than color I would say – right now I am addicted to adding animal prints and sparkles. Some certain people are to blame for this 😉
QB: How did you get started in art? Was fingerpainting a favorite past time (giggles!)
MG: Haha, I was never a fan of finger painting – I just remember big blots and blobs that resembled ketchup stains!
I started by trying to copy the line art of American comics such as the Archie series and Garfield! I am a huge Japanese Anime and Manga fan – so, when Pokemon and Digimon were huge here I learned to draw from all of the hundreds of pictures I collected.
QB: After I noticed your talent with Alexa’s picture, I immediately contacted you. Were you so overwhelmed with how fast your popularity grew?
MG: Yes! My word, I was amazed! I sent Alexa the artwork over Twitter – TWICE! She retweeted it and then in a minute it had two hundred views! It was surreal, though I was just happy that Alexa had tweeted me back! I also designed her Twitter background!! Thanks to her I have received a lot of recognition from her tweets, updates and mentioning me in an interview on CLUBZONE.FM. I had drawn the piece for her to say ‘thank you’ – my first “profession” is actually celebrity reporting then art.
QB: I see Tracy DiMarco also contacted you? Did you make her a cartoon too?
MG: Yes! I interviewed both Tracy and Alexa, but Tracy and I had never actually “spoken” away from that, then Alexa updated her Facebook about my drawing of herself and her adorable dog, Rue. Tracy saw that and sent me a message saying how cute it was. We got chatting more, I drew her one and now we chat often!
QB: Have more and more projects been building for you?
MG: Yes! Since my drawing for Alexa I received so many requests and also people wanting for me to review their clothing samples after realizing I’m a writer, too. It’s mind-blowing what social networking can do. It all started with her and I am forever grateful!! Before then I had never had requests except from friends. It’s helped me reach a new level for my brand!
QB: Anytime soon for a website and/or how can people contact you for your work?
MG: Of course – a website is an online business card for a brand! It should be up by February, but for now follow my updates on Twitter http://www.twitter.com/MishGov or like my fan page, http://www.facebook.com/mizz.informed – you may always request my contact details via these platforms!
I’d also like to thank some of the Jerseylicious girls (Alexa, Tracy, Brielle and Gayle) for the support and the great friends I have met through them! And THANK YOU to EVERYONE that have sent me fan mail, liked a status, commented or have just been awesome!
In addition, my words of advice? Anything is possible! Do not let anyone tell you that something is unobtainable – do not ever set limits for yourself!
Thank you so much Michelle…and so happy to interview you and have you be a part of the Queen Buzz Family!!! You are so Buzzworthy!!!
For more on Michelle and her work be sure to chek her out on Twitter and Facebook…because her talents have just begun!
