This week we’re getting up close and personal! Ladies, you know how important your bra is – whether you’re big or small a bra is supportive, uplifting and controlling. We all know the feeling when you take your bra off after a long day of work – FREEDOM!- and the idea of putting your bra back on to leave the house just doesn’t thrill you in the least. Maybe there’s something to that…maybe just like guys, all bras aren’t the same. Maybe, just maybe, you wouldn’t feel constricted and uncomfortable with a different support system.
|Here’s a little fun fact for you: Did you know that about 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size?|
SO that means a vast majority of you reading this blog right now are wearing the wrong bra for your body. Hearing these statistics made me realize that I did notice a difference between certain bras that I wear (they are all the same size btw).
After a few weeks of thinking this through, I’ve decided my favorite bra brand was Victoria’s Secret. Each bra I buy from this store seems to last me a really long time (first bra I bought from them cost me 50$ and lasted 4 years), they seem to fit me really well and I don’t have that achy, get-this-constricting-thing-off-of-me feeling at the end of an 8 hour work day. I’ve bought bras from all over: Aerie, JcPennys, Kohls, just to name a few and none of them hold up and feel like VS bras do.
DO: realize a bra is an investment
Yes, I realize that VS bras have a nice price tag – but in all honesty, you get what you pay for. I’ve had to replace more 10-15$ bras than I have 25-50$ bras. Plus, when it comes to your body & comfort, why would you settle for something you’ll have to replace in a few months that doesn’t fit you as well as you’d want a bra to fit. You deserve comfort. You deserve a splurge.
DON’T: DRY IT!!
Never ever EVER throw your bra in the dryer, it destroys it. Now, they recommend hand washing your bra as well….but I, of course, have no patience for that, so I came up with a cheat. Tide came up with a bra bag – basically a lingerie bag except circular and can fit 2 bras (a zipper to a little compartment on either side). So far using this prevents distortion/damage and also prevents a tangled mess in the washer.
To get more tips on bras, I contacted my good friend Nicole. This beautiful blue-eyed bombshell is my go-to bra guru. As a former employee of Victoria’s Secret, I racked her brain to get the 411 for you!
DO: Buy more than one
“When it comes to purchasing your bras you always want to keep this in mind: buy in 3′s. One to wear, one to wash, and one to have.”
DON’T: Think that all push-ups are the same
“Just because two bras are push-ups does not mean that they will push up the same way, for example the gorgeous and fabulous bras at Victoria’s Secret. Yes, both push up, but both have different types of padding. The gorgeous is more of a marshmallow feeling padding where it is more comfortable to wear – it feels like it is not there; while the fabulous has actual cream in the padding, this helps get a more natural looking push-up and helps hide any imperfections the women may feel she has.”
DO: Wash them a certain way
“The best thing to do is to hand wash them and lay them flat to dry. If you don’t have the time to hand wash (like a majority of college students and working women in today’s society) do a separate wash of just your bras and underwear – cold cycle on delicate. Make sure you close all the snaps of the bras that way if you have any lace on anything it will not get ruined when you go to take them out.” (If you are concerned about lace being damaged, throw the bra into a lingerie bag.)
DO: GET FITTED!
“Tell them to get fitted! It may be an awkward experience at first, but having the best fitting bra is going to make the world of a difference seeing how over half of women in america are wearing the wrong size. If they get fitted at Victoria’s Secret, they will get this paper called the perfect fit card, it will have their size that they were fitted at and the consultant will mark off the different types of bras that she likes or will work best for her.”
DON’T: Think that all brand’s sizes run the same
“Store sizes are a little different. VS bras tend to be a little tighter, so don’t get frightened if you’re measured at something that you’re normally not use to. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. The consultants at VS have to get certified on how to fit people and every store has a bra expert lead. She is the one with the most experience and the most knowledge of all the bras the store carries. If you don’t agree with a fitting from one of the other consultants I would recommend talking to her, she normally is wearing a name badge that says bra expert.”
DO: Know which part of your bra needs to provide the support
“It is important to remember that the straps should not be doing the majority of the work. The band (going around your chest) should be able to hold the girls up without the help of the straps….well a majority of the way at least.”
DO: Know what the 3 levels of hook-and-eyes are for
“You know how there are 3 different hooks on the back of any bra? Well, they were designed that way for a reason. When getting fitted you always want to make sure that the tightest one is the very first one (hook-and-eye clasp farthest out). This is because as you wear the bra the “wings” get stretched out (also has to do from the washing process) so once the wings stretch out to a point, you then move to the middle hook, this should now be back in the place of where the first hook was. By wearing your bras this way you will have this bra 3 times longer than going the other way around.” (This was news to me, anyone else not know this?!)
DON’T: Forget the matching panty!
“The best feeling in the world is putting on your new favorite bra and then the matching panty. Knowing you have something that may be a little sexier then what you’re used to can have an effect on how you carry yourself the rest of the day” (I’m sure everyone has gotten that feeling before while carrying that pink striped bag through the mall! Gotta be proud of your purchase!)
